Wales business waste and recycling laws

Wales has its own workplace recycling rules, separate from England’s Simpler Recycling. Here is what businesses operating in Wales need to separate and why it matters for your contract.

If you trade in Wales, do not assume an English waste contract automatically meets Welsh law. Wales introduced workplace recycling requirements earlier and in a different shape to England’s Simpler Recycling. Mixing streams that must be kept separate can lead to enforcement and to recycling loads being rejected.

The core idea

Workplaces in Wales are required to separate specified recyclable materials for collection, rather than putting everything in one general bin. The exact list and any exemptions are set by Welsh Government regulations — check the current GOV.WALES / Welsh Government guidance for your premises type, because the detail (including food waste and cartons) has been implemented in stages and can differ from England.

How this differs from England

England’s Simpler Recycling timetable (including the later date for micro-firms) does not automatically apply in Wales. If you run sites in both countries, you may need different bin setups. We will not copy-paste an English three-stream template onto a Welsh site without checking.

Duty of Care still applies

Wherever you are in the UK you must use a registered carrier and keep waste transfer notes. See our Duty of Care guide.

What to do next

Tell us your site is in Wales when you request a quote. We will compare partners who collect the separated streams Welsh workplaces need, rather than forcing an English-only setup.

Frequently asked questions

Does Simpler Recycling apply in Wales?

Simpler Recycling is the English workplace recycling reform. Wales has its own workplace recycling law. Don't assume the English rules and dates apply to a Welsh site.

Can I use the same bins as my English sites?

Only if the streams and separations match Welsh requirements. Many businesses need a Wales-specific setup. We'll compare accordingly.

Where can I read the official rules?

Use current Welsh Government / GOV.WALES workplace recycling guidance for the legal list of materials and any exemptions. We help with the collection contract, not with replacing official guidance.
